Hannah Palamer’s piece “Aaaniindi Ezhaayin (Where are you Going?)” took home Gold in the Best Personal Essay category at the 2024 Digital Publishing Awards.

Palamer’s essay centers on her relationship with her Uncle Kelly, whose struggles with addiction are only part of his story. Palamer’s vivid storytelling brings readers into the warmth and humour of her family circle where she confronts the pain of her past and reconnects to her Indigenous identity.

Winners were announced at a ceremony on Friday, June 13, 2025 in Toronto. This is the first time a Working Draft article has won a Digital Publishing Award.

The Digital Publishing Awards are given out by the National Media Awards Foundation (NMAF), a Canadian organization that honors outstanding journalists and writers in Canada. The awards are judged by a jury of media professionals. Gold winners in individual categories receive $500.

Earlier this year, “Aaaniindi Ezhaayin (Where are you Going?)” was also shortlisted for Best Multicultural Story in the Academic Category at the Canadian Online Publishing Awards.
